Govey

Project Overview:

The problem: There needs to be a platform that can help guide first generation immigrant families on how to get involved in governemnt because they should be able to participate in their community and represent their beliefs.

The goal: Our government informational app will let users understand who is running office which will affect anyone that wants to get involved in government like young voters by organizing reliable information about every candidate and ways to get involved on a singular app. We will measure effectiveness by app ratings and the number of downloads it will have.

The product: The Govey app helps anyone who wants to get involved in government or desires to become more informed about their community.

Responsibilities: User research, Wireframing, Prototyping, Usability testing

I interviewed young members of first-generation families to gather their understanding about local and federal government. I hoped to gather their pain points when it comes to finding out methods and ways to get educated about their government. Furthermore, I wanted to figure out if they had any experience on other applications that helps users to stay informed about their government.

Competitive Analysis

After scoping the competative landscape, I understood that there were not many applicaitons and resources that perfectly could compare to the ideation of Govey. However, these four applications below mirrored closest to the idea of Govey.

Personalizes the experience by suggesting candidates that are close to policial matrix
Daily civics quiz

Legal jargon that is not helpful for people unfamiliar with language

Simple and straightforward design
Bills and issues are seperated into segements so easy to look through
Summarizes the bill and puts in quotes from supporters and opponents to bill
Need to sign up and login to contact reps

Accessibility considerations

The app features highly contrasting colors so that any user needing vision assistance can easily navigate through the app. Colors like black, white, red, blue and purple were chosen for accessibility considerations and were confirmed on the contrast checker.

Gestures and motion are kept simple. Complex gestures can be inaccessible and challenging for users with dexterity and motor impairments. As such motions were kept simple and straightforward.

Layouts are kept consistent especially for all officials. Navigational elements appear in the same locations through out the app. Consistency was kept in mind while designing the app so that it is clear and helps the user to navigate.
